Our Purpose

Addressing the need for more housing on the island of Maui to assist displaced families after the wildfires, CNHA is seeking homeowners who are willing to build Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU). 

Interested homeowners will need to have approved plans and permits to proceed with building prior to applying for a forgivable loan of up to $50,000.  The loan will be forgiven after a homeowner has hosted a displaced, fire-impacted family for three years.

  • Verification you are the homeowner 

  • Approved ADU Building Plans 

  • Approved Building Permit

 FAQs

  • A property owner may only use these funds to build one ADU on their property.

  • Yes

  • In order to increase housing inventory in a timely manner, construction must be completed within 120 days of loan closing. Any delays may subject you to return a portion and/or all loan funding prior to expected due dates.

  • The homeowner would be responsible for any costs beyond $50,000.

  • CNHA reserves the rights to inspect the unit throughout the three year period to ensure compliance.

  • Homeowners will be allowed to charge rent up to 80% of the HUD Fair Market Rent.

  • Yes, the minimum requirement is 500 sq ft

  • Yes

  • Yes, bathrooms are needed and at least a kitchenette.

  • The first 50% of the loan amount will be released upon signing loan closing documents. Remaining 50% upon receipt of the Final Inspection of the completed ADU.

  • CNHA will review your rental records for forgiveness of the loan after three years.

  • First, the property owner can register as a Host on helpingmaui.org.

    Then, our Kākoʻo Maui Team may be able to assist with finding a displaced/impacted family.

    CNHA cannot guarantee placement in your ADU.
