Supplemental Housing Assistance Program

Kālele: nvt. to lean upon, as a support

This program is available to Hawaiʻi residents who were displaced by the Maui Wildfires with a pre-disaster primary residence (owned or rented) in a disaster-impacted area of Maui County. Approved households are eligible to receive a one time grant of up to $5,000 to cover housing expenses such as rent, mortgage, and utilities.

 It’s important to note that applicants do not need to be of Native Hawaiian ancestry to apply for this program.

Before you begin the application process, we kindly request that you review the following guidelines to determine if you qualify, understand the eligibility requirements, and ensure you have the necessary documents for your application.

Who Can Qualify

  • Be a full-time resident of the State of Hawaiʻi

  • Displaced by the Maui wildfires, with a pre-disaster primary residence (owned or rented) located in a disaster-impacted area of Maui County 

  • Have a residence that was destroyed or sustained significant structural damage requiring major repairs or making it uninhabitable

  • Must be at 150% AMI or below

  • Households currently receiving support from FEMA or the Hawaiʻi Interim Housing Program (Ka Laʻi Ola, Hale o Lāʻie, DHS GAP Rental Assistance) are not eligible. 

Eligibility Expenses

  • Rent, including security deposit and past-due payments

  • Mortgage payments for current or destroyed dwelling

  • Utilities including water, electricity, and HOA dues

Program Requirements

  • Grantees are eligible for optional Financial Empowerment or Literacy Counseling from our Certified HUD Counselors.

Required Documents Needed to Apply

  • Identification

  • Accepted ID includes Hawaii State ID or Driver’s License, Passport, Military ID, Out of State ID (with support of Hawaii residency), and proof of Social Security (Social Security Card or Tax Documents verifying your SSN)

  • Proof of residency in a disaster-impacted area on or before August 8, 2023 

  • Proof of Income (2023 tax document or two months of most recent income statement for all household members) 

  • Proof of current housing (current rental agreement, mortgage statement, utility bill)
