KĀHULI

Named after the critically endangered Hawaiian tree snail, Kāhuli, this tiny dwelling pays homage to these vital yet diminutive creatures and celebrates their colorful presence in Hawai'i’s forests. Much like the increasingly rare snail, there is a scarcity of affordable housing in Lahaina. Kāhuli seeks to address this shortage.

With a footprint of 500 square feet, this accessory dwelling unit (ADU) can be added to any residential lot on Maui. Despite its compact size, Kāhuli is designed to maximize functionality. It includes an indoor laundry closet, pantry, ample storage space and a shaded outdoor living area.

Steps to rebuild with this design:

  • Choose a designed home plan that best align with your needs and preferences.

  • PILI will conduct a thorough assessment to ensure that your chosen plan can be accommodated on your specific site, considering factors such as topography, zoning regulations, and any site-specific requirement. Some sites may require a boundary and topographic survey in order to complete the site verification. PILI will notify you during this stage if a survey will be required.

  • Upon successful site verification, we will provide you with the finalized site plan for your approval. You'll have the opportunity to review the proposed home plan on your site and to confirm the design meets your expectations and requirements.

  • Once the plans are reviewed, approved, and finalized, PILI will handle the completion of all necessary permit documents and assist you with the application for the building permit through the MAPPS system. Permit review fees are to be paid by the homeowner.

  • Please note that other firms may have a different process.

  • PILIʻs pre-designed home plans are offered at no-cost to homeowners, the costs incurred for designing and drafting these architectural documents have been waived. However, a minimal fee will be required for the creation of the individual site plans and architectural stamp. This fee helps cover the expenses associated specifically with site planning and ensures we can continue providing valuable support to our community.
