“I actually appreciate being treated as a person, and not someone who is displaced, so I am grateful and I thank them for that.”
Kākoʻo Maui Relief and Aid Services
On September 4th, 2023, just under a month after the Maui Wildfires, the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement took an unprecedented step in the realm of disaster recovery by opening the Kākoʻo Maui Relief and Aid Services Center in Kahului.

Rebuild Assistance
Meet the Ah Hees, Lahaina’s first family to receive a certificate of occupancy for their rebuilt home following the 2023 Maui Wildfire.
With the help of CNHA and the Kāko’o Maui Pre-Development Grant and the Distribution Center, Mau and Ariel were able to complete and furnish their rebuild in less than two years. The Pre-Development Grant financially empowers homeowners impacted by the wildfires by awarding recipients $15,000 to use toward rebuilding their homes.
With the support of our generous sponsors, Kākoʻo Maui has distributed over $3M in rebuild grant assistance.
Homeowner Rebuild Resource
Through a partnership with the County of Maui and the American Institute of Architects’ Maui chapter, Kākoʻo Maui has been able to provide pre-approved architectural designs for free or at a reduced cost thanks to our partner architectural firms.

Kākoʻo Maui Distribution Center
Opened in September 2023, the Kākoʻo Maui Distribution center provides disaster relief supplies to those impacted by the Maui Wildfires in choice-based environment. Community members with appointments can select items they qualify for based on their level of impact, while walk-ins and non-impacted residents can access our selection of pre-loved items in a cost-free “thrift store” style setting.
Together, we are doing all that we can to kākoʻo and kōkua Maui through direct outreach to residents and organizations, access to aid at our resource center, and distribution of essential supplies and food. We extend our mahalo to you, the lāhui, for your generosity and continued support through the challenges ahead.
